SMATRICS EnBW Strengthens Its Role as Driver of Ultra-Fast Charging Infrastructure

SMATRICS EnBW is Austria's leading provider of ultra-fast charging stations and expanded its network to 683 high-power charging (HPC) stations in the first quarter. Thanks to the strategic expansion of these locations, charging can be integrated easily into people's daily lives.

Over the past twelve months, the SMATRICS EnBW charging network has grown by nearly 50 percent, expanding from approximately 460 to 683 ultra-fast charging points. In the first quarter of 2026, twelve HPC charging points were added in Vienna, ten in Lower Austria, and eight in Upper Austria. This means that more than half of all SMATRICS EnBW ultra-fast charging points are located in these three states. In total, the charging infrastructure operator now offers 113 locations offering ultra-fast charging with up to 400 kilowatts of energy. SMATRICS EnBW is thus further solidifying its role as the leading provider of fast-charging infrastructure in Austria.

Thanks to the consistent expansion of the charging network in recent years, SMATRICS EnBW is prepared for the expected surge in electric mobility in Austria. In March, one in four newly registered passenger cars in Austria was already fully electric. “It comes as no surprise to me that 2026 will be the breakthrough year for e-mobility,” says Thomas Landsbek, CEO of SMATRICS EnBW. “SMATRICS EnBW—and Austria in general—invested in a high-quality, nationwide charging infrastructure early on, so that today there are already more than 4,300 HPC charging points available across the country. This provides security—and now enables a rapid, smooth take-off of electric mobility.”

Seamless Integration of Charging into Daily Life

E-mobility is clearly becoming a stabilizing factor in times of rising energy prices, a trend that is also reflected in the vehicle market: demand and registration figures continue to rise significantly. To enable customers to integrate charging into their daily lives as seamlessly as possible, SMATRICS EnBW is strategically deploying its fast-charging infrastructure in locations where customers can charge without wasting time—such as during breaks on long-distance trips or while running everyday errands like grocery shopping.

The most attractive locations are close to shops and restaurants

All charging points newly installed in the first quarter are located at retail partners. SMATRICS EnBW currently operates nearly 450 charging points at retail stores, retail parks, and home improvement stores. “Attractive locations are essential for expanding the charging infrastructure—especially in a market that is already well-developed, such as Austria.” Charging options at retail partners offer the advantage that no new parking spaces need to be created. This allows us to implement the installation more quickly and easily thanks to existing infrastructure. In addition, ultra-fast charging enables the ideal integration of charging into everyday activities such as shopping or dining out, and thus, in many cases, charging without any additional time investment,” says Landsbek.

Upgrades to SMATRICS EnBW Charging Parks

The demands on public charging infrastructure are steadily increasing. User-friendly features, such as price displays or the option to pay by credit card, promote acceptance and trust, and are being widely implemented by SMATRICS EnBW, particularly at its charging stations located near highways. At the same time, charging parks are increasingly being expanded to include dining and seating areas, restrooms, canopies, and charging points for vehicles with trailers, significantly enhancing comfort and user-friendliness. Across the SMATRICS EnBW network, the electricity used for operations—regardless of location or the number of available charging stations—comes 100 percent from renewable energy supplied by VERBUND.

By the end of 2026, more than 900 ultra-fast charging stations are expected to be available on the SMATRICS EnBW network.
